KMML is setting up a Titanium Sponge Plant with an installed capacity of 500 Tons Per Year (TPY) which later will be expanded to 1000 TPY. The plant will utilize technology developed by the Defense Metallurgical Research Laboratory, Hyderabad (DMRL). The plant will be first of its kind in the country and on commissioning, India will be the seventh nation attaining capability to produce Titanium. The project is expected t o cost Rs. 145 crores and is fully funded by ISRO. Titanium, often described as the metal of the 21st century is known for its high strength, light weight, non-corrosive and non-reactive quality. It finds immense use in space and defense applications. Apart from this, titanium is used in surgical and orthopedic transplants, aerospace industry, atomic energy, and of late for jewelry
Hon. Chief Minister of Kerala Shri V.S. Achuthanandan laid the foundation stone of the Titanium Sponge Plant on 27th Dec 2006 in the presence of the Hon. Minister for Industries, Shri. Elamarom Kareem and other eminent dignitaries. The construction activity (Bhoomi Pooja) was inaugurated by Shri. N.K.Premachandran - Hon. Minister for Water Resources on 17th April 2008. The plant is expected to meet the country’s present requirements of Titanium for its prestigious space missions.
The principal raw material for the plant is Titanium Tetrachloride (TiCl4), which will be produced and supplied by the Titanium Pigment unit of KMML. Another raw material, i.e Magnesium (Mg) will be imported. The plant will generate 2000 TPY of Magnesium Chloride as bye-product, which finds application in the manufacture of welding flex and welding rods. Plan to set up a unit to recover Magnesium from the Magnesium chloride generated is also on the cards. This will bring about considerable cost reduction and better profitability for the new unit.
The construction activity of the new plant is in full swing. Orders for all major machinery have been placed. Installation of machinery will commence by mid September 2009. Commissioning trails are scheduled for Dec 2009 and the plant is scheduled to start commercial production by June 2010.
Out of thirteen buildings, the constructions of eight buildings are nearing completion. The first building namely ACCESS CONTROL BUILDING is fully completed and the handing over ceremony of the same was held on 19/08/2009 (WEDNESDAY) at 10:00 AM. Mr.K.S.Srinivas IAS, MD, KMML formally took over the building during the occasion.
