· Rs.143.11crore project completely funded by Vikram Sarabhai Space Centre and Technology provided by Defence Research and Development Organisation
He was inaugurating the country’s first Titanium Sponge Plant (TSP) at Chavara complex of the Kerala Public Sector, The Kerala Minerals and Metals Limited (KMML) on Sunday [ 27.02.2011].
The TSP is a joint venture of KMML, Vikram Sarabhai Space Centre (VSSC) and the Defence Metallurgical Research Laboratory. The Project is fully funded by VSSC with Rs.143.11-crore.
With the inauguration of TSP,
Mr.Antony said all developmental work should remain above politics,” if politics gets mixed with development, we will not be able to progress. Though Kerala has developed, that development cannot be compared to the pace of development taking place in the neighbouring States.”

Mr.Antony recalled that it was during his stint as the Chief Minister in 1977, the then President N.Sanjeeva Reddy laid the foundation stone for KMML in which he had presided over that function.
Even during that time the thinking of a TSP was there and today that dream comes true, he said.
In his presidential address, Minister for Water Recourses N.K.Premachandran, who is also the Chavara MLA, said that through TSP, Chavara had entered the industrial map of the world.
He said Rs.2, 000-crore Titanium Sponge Plant complex is also envisaged near KMML. That would be a joint venture between Steel Authority of India and KMML.
He said that TSP had proved that a strong Centre-State relationship could lead not only to industrial but also all round development of the State.
Honourable Industries Minister Sri.Elamaram Kareem inaugurated the Sponge Handling Plant of TSP. He said that production at TSP would commence within a month. In order to commercialise the production at TSP, a Magnesium Recovery Plant would be established soon.
He said the performance of KMML was the best yardstick to assess the development of the State PSUs during the past five years.
This year, KMML expected a profit of Rs.130 crore, which would go up to Rs.200 crore, the next year and in four years, KMML’s profit would touch Rs.500 crore.

Nation’s First Coastal Academy at Kannur
Honourable Union Defence Minister Sri.A.K.Antony has formally announced the central government’s decision to set up Nation’s First Coastal Academy at Azheekal, Kannur. This announcement was made in his inaugural speech during the eve of dedication of the nation’s first Titanium Sponge Plant at KMML Complex, Chavara. It would beneficial to the nation as this will keep our coastal border intact from the external threats.
